IVR103 – Topical Retinoid

Indication

Acne affects most teenagers to some extent.  However, adults in their 20s - even into their 40s - can also get acne.   Acne manifests itself in the form of plugged pores (blackheads and whiteheads), pimples, and even deeper lumps (cysts or nodules) that occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and the upper arms.  While not a life threatening condition, acne can be upsetting and disfiguring. When severe, acne can lead to serious and permanent scarring.  Even less severe cases can lead to scarring. To avoid acne scarring as well as to alleviate its psychosocial impact, treating acne early is important.

Product Profile

Topical retinoids such as tretinoin have been used to treat skin conditions such as acne, rosacea and photodamage. The major side effect of topical tretinoin therapy is skin irritation. , seen in 90% of treated patients. Other side effects include patchy redness, localized swelling, dryness, and scaling. Irritation is cited as the reason for discontinuation of treatment in approximately 50% of patients and limits the utility of this otherwise highly effective agent. Any means to reduce irritation from tretinoin while preserving its effectiveness is therefore seen as a very desirable attribute of a topical formulation. Unfortunately, previous efforts to reduce irritation from tretinoin or other retinoids have resulted in a concomitant lessening of their effectiveness.

IVR103 is specifically designed to reduce the level of irritation associated with tretinoin while maintaining its efficacy. This is accomplished by entrapping tretinoin in biopolymer lipid particles which control the rate of release of the agent into the skin. The resulting product is a cosmetically elegant formulation that significantly reduces the level of skin irritation while uniquely maintaining retinoid effectiveness.
